Today you will learn how to start your own blog.
You may be wondering, why would I want to start my own blog?
Since you can create and focus them on any niche, there are millions of reasons.
The main one most people care about: Getting paid for your thoughts, getting free flights and free hotels at 5-star resorts, and making money while you sleep.
Still not convinced? Check out these amazing blogs people started with no idea how much it would change their lives:
https://onestep4ward.com – A travel blogger who has made over $1.5 million online
www.makingsenseofsense.com – A finance blogger who travels the world in an RV and makes over $120,000 a month
https://www.nateliason.com – Nat blogs about whatever interests him and makes a ton of money online.
You can seriously talk about any niche that interests you and make a butt load of money doing it. Passively.
You just need two things:
- A domain
So what is a domain and why do you need one?
Domains are the things you type into the address bar of your browser that takes you to websites like this one where you can learn lots of random things on the internet.
Having your own domain comes with many benefits but the main ones are trust and branding which is essential to making money online.
If you already have a domain name or would like to get your free domain while you sign up for hosting – skip this section.
One might ask: “Why would you want to buy a domain if you get a free one when you sign up for hosting?”
My answer would be, in case you wanted to create multiple websites that aren’t blogs such as e-commerce stores which is how I get paid while I travel the world.
I’ve been using Namecheap for years now and they have a very easy to use interface. Some domains are less than $1 and they all come with FREE privacy protection for life, meaning your contact information stays safe in case your crazy stalker ex tries looking you up.
How to start your own Blog
You can click here to get started on creating your blog, then simply follow the steps below.
- Click the get started now button and select your plan.
The toughest thing here is deciding on the domain name you want to have. Mine was simple since it’s my last and first name and a little play on the word legendary.
Don’t be lazy here.
You’re going to want something easy to remember, searchable, and long term. If you’re making a travel blog, something like thebroketraveler.com sounds cool in theory, but what happens when you aren’t broke anymore? Something like frugraltravel.com would be a much better option since there are never-ending ways to save money while traveling.
Names are always great because you’re constantly evolving, and if the blog is about your journey through life or your specific niche, it’s easy to remember.
The key here is to think for the long term.
Let’s talk about the costs of blogging.
You can do a one month trial for $18.90, but that doesn’t really make sense if you’re starting a blog since you’ll want your blog up for years.
Now, you may be thinking: “What if blogging isn’t for me?”
Those were my exact thoughts when I first started. You can always start out with the 12-month plan which brings your price to about $3.95 per month or $47.40 a year.
It’s still a great price, and you get to try blogging for a year to see if its right for you. In the end, feel free to choose whatever makes the most sense to you.
After choosing your package, enter your personal and payment information.
Next, you will be asked to enter a password. Make sure your password is either very easy to type and remember, or you use a password keychain like LastPass like I do. The reason for this is because you may need to access your cPanel or other things and since SiteGround is VERY secure, it will log you out if you don’t click anything for more than a few seconds and you will have to re enter your password.
3. Connect your domain and your hosting
Note: You can skip this section if you bought your domain directly through SiteGround
If you bought your domain through Namecheap as mentioned in the beginning, you’ll need to connect your domain to your hosting account. Namecheap has full support pages for setting name servers for your domain names.
How to modify your DNS Nameservers when you are using Namecheap for your domain and SiteGround for your hosting:
- Log into your SiteGround account
- Go the the My Accounts tab
- Click on Manage Account
- Go to cPanel
- Find the nameservers in the Account Information box on the left side
- Log into your Namecheap account
- Find your domain and click Manage
- Scroll down to Nameservers
- Select Custom DNS
- Put in the nameservers from step 5 into these 2 fields
- Click the green checkmark
If at any point you get stuck, ask SiteGround support. You can start live chatting with someone in under 5 minutes. They’re extremely helpful and will walk you through it.
The moment you’ve been waiting for. SiteGround makes it very easy to create a WordPress blog, and best of all, it’s FREE.
- When you are in your cPanel, click on the WordPress icon located under “AUTOINSTALLERS”
- Click the “Install” button. This begins the installation.
- Choose your Protocol
- Then choose your domain
- Find “In Directory”, leave that blank.
- Now you will see “Admin Account”. This is where you choose your username and password for your WordPress website. Choose something secure and non-generic like the very basic admin/admin.
- You will want to check “Wordpress Starter” under Easy Setup as well
- Click “Install”
- Remember to write down your username and password
Time to celebrate! You now have your very own WordPress blog. Now your only jobs are to work on the design and to produce high-quality content for your future millions of readers.
Again, if at any point you get stuck or confused, reach out to SiteGround (or Namecheap) if you used them and talk to support.
WordPress is pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it. If you don’t know where to start, I’d suggest watching this youtube video where they walk you through everything.
